The most common question we get asked is “How expensive is the equipment to start hunting ghosts.” and the answer is that it can be as cheap or as expensive as you choose it to be. There is a huge list of options out there to get you started and many of them are very cheap. Most start out spending the bare minimum, but as they get more into it decide that it's time to upgrade because they want to get more hard evidence. Really to get going all you need is a flashlight and a cell phone and you will have everything you need to start capturing evidence for yourself. A cell phone these days is the ultimate electronic multi tool. It's an all in one camera, video camera, flashlight, vibration detector, and digital recorder. It's so versatile these days that we still use them as part of our actual kit, and any time one of us upgrades to a new one we throw the old one into our kit to be used as an extra device. Since we have started we have invested quite a bit of money into what we put into our field kit and are constantly adding new tools to help us document and perform experiments. Below is a list of our gear, and how we use it.
It's theorized by many investigators, depending on who you talk to, that spirits can manifest by drawing power from areas with high electromagnetic energy. Some groups think that these spirits can manipulate the energy or even give it off when manifesting. because of this many investigators see value in measuring EMF. These are handy devices that can vary in price range. Our favorite and most accurate by far is the MEL-Meter which was design specifically for a paranormal investigation in mind. Not only does this device measure electromagnetic frequencies, but samples temperature as well. In addition to this device, we use other models which measure EMF in different ways including static and radiation as well as straight EMF.

Full Spectrum Cameras
We use a variety of cameras that record images in different spectrums of light. Most of our experiments have to be filmed in the dark so that there is no light contamination interfering with the data we are recording. It's thought that paranormal entities only appear or show up best in certain spectrums of light, thus our main cameras are designed to capture images in the dark using the infrared spectrum. We have several handheld cameras that we use with mounting rigs as well as wearable GoPro style body cams that have been modified to record in the full spectrum of light. in addition to these, we use CCTV DVR cameras to capture even more action while we are away from an area. These cameras are usually monitored by another team member back at home base.

Audio is one of the most important pieces of an investigation as well as the hardest element to control. We have several tools to help us try to capture legitimate electronic voice phenomenon. Currently, we utilize four different types of digital recorders that the investigators carry with them during the investigation. Often times we will stop and listen to the recordings live to see if we have received any kind of response. In addition to digital recorders, we also utilize two cassette style recorders. Not only do these capture audio in a different way, the magnetic tape, and motors that run the devices produce EMF patterns that could potentially feed a manifestation. Of course, all our cameras also capture audio. Each bit of audio is analyzed carefully for EVP's after each investigation.

Temperature is something we are all familiar with and it's pretty straight forward. The absence of heat creates a cool feeling. Often times paranormal activity is said to cause cold spots or gives people chills. However, it may go deeper than that. To a scientist heat equals energy. If something is potentially sapping the heat from an area it is using energy, and that is something that can be measured and documented. To do this we utilize infrared digital thermometers to take measurements as well as an infrared thermographic imaging device that actually lets us see the heat in a visual format. These tools are also very important to aid in debunking certain sounds and feelings had during an investigation often revealing unwelcome rodents and pests causing strange noises as well as air leaks from old AC units and drafty windows.

P SB7 spirit box
one of the more popular tools for paranormal investigation, The PSB7 Spirit Box is a tool for attempting communication with paranormal entities. It uses radio frequency sweeps to generate white noise which theories suggest give some entities the energy they need to be heard. When this occurs we will sometimes hear voices or sounds coming through the static in an attempt to communicate. The unit utilizes a milli-second adjustable Forward or Reverse frequency "sweep" technique coupled with a proprietary high frequency synthetic noise or "white noise" distributed between frequency steps. Our model has been modified by removing the antenna to reduce the amount of radio interference that it receives.
Smart Phone / iPhone
As we said above, the modern day smart phone is an all around tool that can perform many functions. The downside is that it may not be as accurate as a dedicated tool for the job, but it can serve as a really good starting place for someone on a budget. We still use our cell phones to capture quick pictures, use as vibration detectors, and digital recorders. There are many apps that can be downloaded to your smart phone. The ones we have found to be the most accurate and reliable are:
Voice Record Pro – Used for capturing EVP. Has a separate sensitivity function for the microphone. (Use with Gain set to high)
GeoPhone – Vibration detector with visual and audio triggers.
