Removing an Entity, The Power of Belief

October 16, 2015

Inevitably, the question will always come up. We’ve spent all night in the house, we’ve documented and recorded every second of time passing since 10:00 pm the night before. We’ve analyzed, debated, and analyzed all the data again. We present everything. Some things we explain easily as a natural happening. But then, there are just a few things we can’t. We’re not saying it’s a spirit and we’re not saying it isn’t. It could be a lot of things, but we just don’t have the evidence to back it up. But even if the number of things we could explain outweighs the number of things we couldn’t by ten to one. Inevitably, the homeowner knew they had ghosts. They just knew it. Hey, I can’t argue because I myself have gathered and presented evidence I cannot explain. We could come back and try again, but the homeowner is already convinced. And, most times, that is just fine. There’s absolutely no harm in that at all. Now you have a fun thing to tell your guests about, a great video to go watch online featuring your house and your stories on our website. And that is just fine.

But, what if it’s not? What if you don’t want to have a house where not everything can be explained? It happens. Sometimes the reaction to the unknown is fear, and that is not something I can live with. I promised when I started accepting outside residential that I would never let someone live somewhere they were afraid of due to something we did. First off, if I find something in a home that is unsettling to the people who live there; if they are afraid or even just uncomfortable - It’s time to go back. It’s time to focus on the things we couldn’t explain and try to explain them. I start with the assumption that we messed up the experiment and rebuild it from scratch. I focus in on that result and attempt to find an explanation. Sometimes that’s all it takes; we find the key element that we didn’t think to test. Sometimes, we come away with even more questions than answers. Sometimes we find nothing at all. And those are the times when things become tricky.

For starters, I’m going to tell you right now. I’m a scientist. My day job is analyzing data to make sure that it’s accurate and that there are no anomalies in it. Numbers never lie, sometimes they may be subject to human error, or sometimes you may simply use the wrong formula. But, numbers don’t lie. It’s a mirror reflection of what I do for NTParanormal. I analyze data and I look for clues in it that make it make sense. Having said that, I am not a non-believer. My journey with this group started when I saw the paranormal for myself. I know what I saw. After that, I captured it on video, photo, and audio. At the time I was not doing it for anyone else but myself (and my closest friends) so I did not worry about maintaining an air tight seal of control over those experiments. It was for myself, and I know the truth. But I can be a follower of both camps. What we currently believe are ghosts have to exist within the perimeters of reality. Thus, they are bound by science. Even if sometimes that science my fringe into the realm of theoretical science. If we never study what we don’t understand, how can we ever hope to understand it? So what are my religious beliefs? I’m agnostic. I’m not atheist, but I’m not foolish enough to blindly walk a path that I don’t fully believe. My religion is something deeply personal to me, and I don’t think it’s something that

I can actually share. Like my thoughts and ideas, my religious beliefs constantly change and evolve with the person I am. And like my thoughts on ghosts, science plays a big part of my religion because I believe that if there is a higher power; she probably operates within some parameters of physics as well even if her understanding is much greater than ours.

Okay, so not much of a segue, but here you go: Having said that, when we cannot come up with anything to satisfy the people we are investigating the question always comes up.

“What do we do to get rid of it?”

It’s at that point in time the empathetic parts of my brain fire up and I want to make about fifty suggestions. It takes everything in my being not to. My beliefs are not your beliefs, I am also not a therapist. The damage that an investigator can do after that question has been asked is immeasurable. What if my suggestion makes things worse? What if the next words out of my mouth cause a crisis of faith? What if, there really is something out there NONE of us understand, I suggest the wrong ritual and your walls start to bleed? It's allotted of pressure. In most cases, I recommend that if they really want to get rid of it that first they just try a simple cleansing, and politely ask the entity to leave, and pray on it as a household in accordance with their own religious beliefs. Unless it’s someone I or a member of my team know personally (not professionally) I refrain from any participation with any of this. I don’t employ psychic, mediums, priests, or anything like that; I can only observe and report what we found. But, for the sake of everyone out there: I’m going to break my rule this one time in hope of giving people some peace of mind.

If you really truly believe your house has some kind of paranormal entity, negative or not, that you no longer wish to have there, these are the steps that I suggest you follow to deal with it. I am in no way advocating one religion over the other or substantiating a claim to demonic or spirit activity. The following methods can be interpreted as either spiritual in nature and work due to those reasons. It’s also theorized by many psychologists that exorcisms and rituals similar in nature are simply a placebo effect. If you are trying these because of activity, you probably do not believe the latter. But, I have to bring it up. If there’s any doubt about what you are experiencing, or none of the methods below are helping you, seeking a therapist for a second opinion will not hurt. Also, calling us to check out your home will not hurt either. Maybe we can give you some insight.

Prayer and Uninvitation
The first and easiest step should be simply asking the entity or bad energy to leave. Be polite, it’s possible that simply letting it know that it is not wanted around may be enough to for it to simply leave. I am not personally religious, and I would never suggest someone who is not, just start praying. But if you are a person of faith, I suggest whatever religion that you are in your household to start with some focused prayer. If possible as a group/family. Prayers asking for the safe passing of the spirit, and the granting of peace for the restless soul may go a long way to helping it move on. If the entity is negative, a prayer for protection and banishment from around you is in order. Also, address the entity directly telling it that it no longer has permission to interact with you. Most of the time, this is enough on its own to settle activity and remove a presence.

Cleansing Ritual
If the above does not work on its own, you may need to cleanse the area. Purify the area by lighting white candles in every room. Buy a sage smudge stick (I like white sage and lavender, and you can get them at a natural foods store). Find a bowl to hold it over (traditionally, abalone shell is used).  Also, set up a cup of water to extinguish it after the ritual. Keeping any religious icons with you during the ritual will also benefit the cleansing.

Open every door and window in your house, and turn on fans if you have them. Light the stick, and when it catches fire, blow it out and allow the embers to start to smoke (like you would light incense). Set your intention for each room starting from the back of the house to the front (you want to push the negative energy from each space and out the front door).  Say a prayer of cleansing, as an example: “I cleanse this room of any impurities, negativity, or anything that does not suit or support the people that live here. I ask that any and all entities leave this space and not return.” Walk around the room, waving the sage stick so its smoke drifts into corners, along walls, around windows, and along ceiling lines.  As you do, imagine the smoke absorbing negativity, problems from those who were in the space before you, toxicity, and anything else you want to go away.  See the smoke dissipating and floating out the windows, and imagine that bad energy flowing out of your space, making room for positive, fresh energy. After you’ve blessed each room, blow out the candle in the room to signify the end of cleansing of that space. Go from room to room until finally ending in the front door. After this last area by the front door, you should end your last prayer with “With this sage, I banish all entities and negative energy from this area and revoke any invitation to return across this threshold.” Cup your hands over the sage smoke and “wash” your face with it, then wave it all over your body as you would in a water shower.  Visualize any residual negativity sailing out of your body, out of your home, and into oblivion. Extinguish the stick in the cup of water or – if your stick was very small or is almost done – flush it down the toilet.  You can also bury it in your back yard (if you are very sure that it is extinguished). Finish the ritual by closing up the house. At each window and door leading to outside, leave a pinch of salt to purify and block negative energy from returning. It’s becoming common to put a little salt water in a sprayer to spritz the area.

Either is fine. To finish, go to the center of the house or space and sit. Clear your mind and visualize white light emanating from your body slowly filling the house and pushing out all darkness and negativity. This will help cleanse yourself as well.

Blessing the House

If the above ritual does not help you may want to have a minister, shaman, or another religious figure to come perform a blessing. If there is still no result, or the activity gets worse it may be time to consider an exorcism. These types of rituals should on be performed by people with experience. This is not something you should just try with your friends. The results could be making the problem worse, demonic attachment, or even possession.

In my experience, I have never met anyone who ever had to escalate anything passed a simple blessing. In fact, there is no harm in starting here, even if there is nothing wrong just as a precaution when moving into a new home or some similar life transition. In most cases, people I know have had good luck with just asking it to leave and revoking permission to hang around.

Psychological Cleansing / Using Science
Most of the time I see people getting spiritual help mainly by the means I talk about above. What if you don't believe in God, or what if you are like me and do not subscribe to a particular religion? The jury is out on if the methods above are simply a psychological placebo effect. I say it doesn't matter. If it makes you feel safe about a place, that is ultimately what brings it all to an end. I tend to be grounded in the idea that entities feed of electrical and emotional energy. So science could play a role even when using the methods above. But if you really want to strip it down to its nuts and bolts; remove high EMF feed points by diagnosing bad wiring, cutting down on electrical sources and such. Even try moving your WiFi. Also try not to feed entities with energy from anxiety, stress, and fear by centering yourself, getting counseling, and possibly medicating if needed. It's not witch doctor science to suggest that your anxiety is a form of energy. After all, if you're in a bad mood, the people around you pick up on that and can often emulate the behavior. So if you swear by science like I do, but somehow find yourself in this strange place of now believing an entity is crowding your space, try removing its fuel source starting with yourself.

Good luck. I hope this helps.
